Best Forex trading book

Written by Wayne McDonell, the Chief Currency Coach at FX Bootcamp, this book shows readers how to successfully trade the Forex market on their own. FX Bootcamp's Guide to Strategic and Tactical Forex Trading skillfully explains how to combine popular technical indicators to formulate a comprehensive market strategy. Readers will then learn how to focus on using this information to create a tactical trading plan--one that will help them pull the trigger to get in and out of a trade. Along the way, McDonell takes the time to discuss the various challenges a Forex trader faces, such as greed, fear, loss, and isolation. As a Forex trader and educator of traders, Wayne McDonell knows what it takes to make it in the competitive world of Forex. And with FX Bootcamp's Guide to Strategic and Tactical Forex Trading he shows readers how.

Wayne really hits the mark with this book. It's a basic summary of the method he teaches at fxbootcamp. Not only does he cover the technical and fundamental aspects that a successful Forex trader needs to know, but he covers the other all important topics too, like risk analysis, trade plans & journals, trade reviews and having the right mindset to be a successful trader. All with no Fluff!

I found Wayne's book really helped me trade according to MY rules, not the markets rules. This meant that when I trade, it's become a lot of fun again. Now I am trading in one night, profit wise, what I used to trade in one month.

If you want to get a clear sense of what is in this book, have a look at his videos on FXStreet blogs called "2 Hour Video: Strategic & Tactical FOREX Trading". blogs. fxstreet/fxbootcamp/2008/03/12/2-hour-video-strategic-tactical-forex-trading

I recommend this book to anyone who feels there is room to improve in their Forex trading, or is looking for a reliable, simple system to follow. The method outline in Wayne's book won't give you every pip in a market's movements, but it will provide you with a large portion of them, in a conservative manner.

I also recommend this book to new FX Bootcampers, as it will help them come up to speed quickly, with the method Wayne teachers at FX Bootcamp.

In response to Jeff Marsick's review (RE - Good But Poorly Edited), I agree that this book could have done with more editting. In regards to Wayne's MACD settings of 21, 55, 8, this is in fact correct. One of the things with Wayne's method is that he uses a slowed down MACD oscillator to guage MARKET speed (medium term price action) and a sped up Stochastics oscillator to measure PRICE momentum (short term price action). This is covered in the above mentioned webinar video at around 18 minutes into it.

The art of forex portfolio1

The art of forex portfolio1The Art Of Forex Portfolio 1

Salve a tutti,

this time Id like to talk you about an ebook (PDF format) titles The Art Of Forex Portfolio that I had the chance to read the first time more than one year ago. The content now has been updated and I had the chance to re-read it lately.

The ebook is quite an easy reading, but also very practical and so Im sure that those of you that want to learn how to build a portfolio will surely find it very useful.

The author of the ebook are Joseph Seelentag and Daniel Peleg. I didnt had the chance to talk with them, but I liked a lot the ebook and sooner or later Ill contact them

By reading the ebook its easy to understand that they know what they are saying as things are detailed but easy enough to be understood by anyone. That can only happen when you have a full knowledge of what youre explaining.

The book is dividide into a few chapters (15):

Chapter 1 is an overview of the book and presentation of the authors.

Chapter 2 is an introduction to Forex and a briefly to MT4 and ZuluTrade platform.

Chapter 3 introduces a few basic concepts like risk/reward and divesification

Chapter 4 is dedicated to analyzing and classify the diffent trading strategies (short term, medium-long term, grid trading and miscellaneous)

Chapter 5 explaing how to select the strategies to be putted in our portfolio based on the type of strategy, the timeframe that they use and the currency pair that they work on (analyzing a little the concept of correlations between them).

Chapter 6 is dedicated to the explainantion of the long process of portfolio testing and otpimization. WIth MT4 things are not easy as we cant backtest/optimize EAs on multiple pairs so here are also explained a few tricks that can be used to have then a global porfolio analysis.

Chapter 7 shows in what MT5 will be better than MT4 and what we can do with it that we actually cant with MT4. MT5 infact has a more advanced portfolio approach.

Chapter 8 is probably one of the most important ones and is dedicated to portfolio balancing. It explains how to control risk and equity curves so that our portfolio gives the smoothest possible equity line. Itll also analyze the compatibility of strategies based on the graphical look of their equity lines. A note about that: with experiece youll learn tha the equity line gives you a LOT of informations about the strategy behind it. There are typical equity lines that are strictly related to strategies. And each strategy has usually a tupical risk profile.

Chapter 9 teaches you how to run multiple strategies together by focusing on those that are the technical problems related to that (Magic Numbers, settings, profiles, etc).

Chapters 10-11-12 switch the attention from the Metatrader platform to the ZuluTrade platform. It is a sort of signal service that can be managed via web. They teach you how to manage a ZuluTrade portfolio and describe you some ready-made ones.

Chapter 13 talks about portfolio and account monitoring

Chapters 14-15 close the ebook talking about signal services and conclusions.

The core of the ebook are chapters 4, 5, 6 and 8. Those 4 chapters will give you many of the informations you need to start analyzing EAs performances and strategies, starting trying to put things together (the right way) and balance them so that the result (the portfolio) gives you a smooth equity line that is our main goal.

Most of the steps described in the ebook are the ones Im taking in building our trading portfolio for 2011

The ebook is not cheap ($97) and its not a mandatory reading for being a succesful automatic trader, but surely will give you a good starting background.

* Final gross prices may vary according to local VAT.

The finance theories underlying Chapters 8 and 10 assume the absence of arbitrage, leading to pricing models that are martingales after adjustments for the market price of risk. Since the martingale models preclude making risk-adjusted profits via trading strategies, these theories imply that the derivatives markets would only attract hedgers . who use derivatives to reduce the risk they face from future movements of stock or bond prices. However, as pointed out by Hull (2006, Chapter 1), derivatives markets have also attracted speculators and arbitrageurs who try to take advantage of the discrepancies between the arbitrage-free theories and the actual market prices. Hedge funds have now become big users of derivatives for all three purposes, namely hedging, speculation, and arbitrage.

Although the Markowitz, CAPM, and Black-Scholes theories in Chapters 3 and 8 assume the absence of market friction and in particular no transaction costs, transaction costs are an important consideration in the design and evaluation of statistical trading strategies. Section 11.3 gives an introduction to estimation and analysis of transaction costs and discusses how transaction costs and the dynamic nature of trading have introduced challenges to the development of statistical trading strategies.

Neural, Genetic and Fuzzy Systems for

Chaotic Financial Markets

Editor: Guido J. Deboeck

377 pages, $55, 1994

In Trading on the Edge, editor Guido Deboeck has been joined by a number of artificial intelligence (Al) researchers in the field of financial market analysis to address various aspects of applying Al to this arena. With its application-oriented approach, this book should appeal to financial professionals and Al researchers alike.

The book is a collection of independent chapters written by different authors, and Deboeck has done an excellent job of selecting, organizing, and presenting the material. The 20 chapters are separated into five parts in which the chapters in each part progress from the general to the specific. The first chapter in each part contains an overview of the technology discussed in the remaining chapters. To ensure continuity, Deboeck provides an introduction as well as some additional paragraphs in certain chapters. The continuity is further reinforced by the fact that Deboeck himself authored or co-authored seven of the 20 chapters.

In the first part, Trading with Neural Networks, the first two chapters examine fundamental neural network techniques and basic preprocessing and post-processing of financial data. These will be of most interest to financial neural network developers, who will also find a number of interesting suggestions on training and data processing. The remaining five chapters in this part cover various financial applications of neural networks, including US stock selection, predicting the Tokyo stock market, short-term trend prediction and reversal recognition for the Taiwan stock market, trading US Treasury notes, and foreign exchange trading.

Part 2, Strategy Optimization with Genetic algorithms, includes three chapters, the first of which is a basic introduction to genetic algorithms (GAs) and their financial applications. The two remaining chapters examine various examples of financial modeling and the optimization of a trading system using GAs and GA-neural network hybrids. Although these chapters just scratch the surface of the application of GAs to financial market analysis, they will provide most readers with a sampling of this technology.

Part 3, Portfolio Management Using Fuzzy Logic, consists of four chapters that address the application of fuzzy rule extraction and fuzzy decision-support to trading US Treasury notes as well as the use of fuzzy hybrid systems. One chapter examines fuzzy, neural and genetic hybrid systems, discussing many methods that may be used to combine these approaches, along with their strengths and weaknesses. The chapter also provides an excellent overview of the ways in which these advanced technologies may be combined to tackle difficult real-world problems, both in financial market analysis and elsewhere. Another chapter looks specifically at a hybrid fuzzy logic and neural network system used to trade the Shanghai stock market.

In part 4, Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, these theories and their relationship to the financial markets are examined. The first chapter provides a brief overview of chaos theory. The second chapter provides a more detailed overview of the application of these concepts to financial time series data in particular. Finally, the third chapter provides empirical results of the application of these techniques to foreign exchange, stock and bond markets. These chapters could provide neural network developers with new preprocessing ideas that may bring out salient features that your existing preprocessing is missing.

In part 5, Risk Management and the Impact of Technology, the risk management chapter emphasizes the issues and requirements associated with the implementation of a risk management system: such a system is a necessary element of any trading system, whether you choose to incorporate advance technologies or not. The final chapter examines the cutting edge of trading technology, including virtual reality and robotic trading.

Since Trading on the Edge examines a variety of data and a large number software programs used by the individual authors of the chapters, editor Deboeck has chosen to also make available two CD-Roms, published by Wayzata Technology, as companions to the book. The first, called Toolkit, contains all software programs discussed in the book, some vendor-supplied demo programs and some sample market data. The second, Investment Navigator, includes tutorials, a vendor database and royalty-free images on trading technology.

Extraordinary advances in computer hardware and telecommunications have forced the world markets to become interrelated on a global scale. The implications of this shift on traditional methods of market analysis are significant. Methods such as single-market technical analysis are no longer sufficient; instead, more advanced of analysis are needed. These methods are being required to examine vast quantities of data from a multitude of sources and glean the relationships among them.

In Trading on the Edge, Deboeck has assembled a variety of such methods and their real-world applications to the financial markets. This book should provide both financial and Al professionals with a broad view of the reality and promise inherent in applying Al to financial analysis.

11trading tips from soros

11trading tips from soros11 trading tips from Soros

I had misplaced my copy of Robert Slaters 1996 biography of George Soros, so I welcomed the opportunity to get my hands on Slaters recently released second edition entitled, Soros: The Life, Ideas, and Impact of the Worlds Most Influential Investor. It also seemed worth adding to the library since it had several new chapters updating the billionaire speculators life story to 2008.

Unfortunately, the new chapters werent particularly captivating from an investors point of view. I wasnt aware of how Soros life since 1996 has been more about philanthropy and political causes all very worthy pastimes but not the kind of material to inspire and instruct an active investor seeking more alpha.

There was no disappointment, however, in reading the chapters covering the younger, hedge-fund manager Soros — essentially the chapters in the first edition that I had read some 10 years ago. Slater is a fine writer with a breezy style and he did some good digging to serve up some substantive fare.

Like Warren Buffett, legendary hedge fund manager George Soros has long been an anomaly — an exception to the efficient market thesis that its futile to try and beat the market. Indeed, Soros not only beat the market over a span of several decades but ended up as one of the wealthiest persons in the world.

Another reason we might be interested in Soros is that he made much of his fortune trading volatility arising from monetary and financial shocks during the 20 years to 1992. We seem to be in a similar kind of era of volatility, so perhaps his approach holds some lessons for today.

Soros first wanted to be a philosopher, someone who made a contribution to human knowledge like Sigmund Freud or John Maynard Keynes. But he didnt impress his professors enough at the London School of Economics and after graduation had to settle for a career in the investment industry.

His capacity and penchant for deep thinking was one thing that distinguished him as a speculator. Specifically, he believed his theory of reflexivity gave him an edge. It postulated that the market had an inherent tendency toward disequilibrium — not equilibrium as economists models assumed.

Markets werent efficient but subject to self-reinforcing boom/bust sequences brought on by the interaction of perceptions and real-world developments. Basically, they fed on each other and produced long swings in economies and financial markets that ultimately reached unsustainable junctures. His job as an investor was to ride the boom up, spot the turning point, and go short the bust.

As I went along in the book, I took note of passages that shed some insight into Soros trading approach. Here is a list of eleven.

1. Some people spend all day talking to their brokers. Soros prefers to talk to a select few people who can be really helpful. Then you need to think and read and reflect.

2. To be successful, you need leisure. You need time hanging heavily on your hands [to talk to people, read, and think].

3. If you have an investment thesis you like, run it by people who support the other side of the argument. See if you still like the thesis afterward.

4. Basically, the way Soros operates is to have a thesis and then he tests it in the market. If the market goes against his position and he feels uneasy (e. g. gets a backache), he cuts his losses.

5. What he took was basic information from various sources and kind of mulched it in his mind. Then he would come up with a thesis that most of the time was valid.

6. When Soros believed he was right. no investment position was too large. Holding back was for wimps. The worse error in Soros book was not being too bold.

7. The key to investing is knowing how to survive. That means at times playing conservatively, cutting losses when necessary and keeping a large portion of ones portfolio out of play.

8. If you are doing poorly, retrench. Dont try to recoup. And when you start again, start small.

9. To be in the game, you have to be willing to endure the pain.

10. Perhaps Soros most distinctive feature, the trait that explained his investment talents the best, was his ability to gain membership in a very exclusive club that included the leadership of the international community. Such encounters clearly gave Soros an advantage over other investors.

11. Invest first and then investigate form a hypothesis, take a toehold position to test the hypothesis, and wait for the market to prove you are right or wrong.

Trading strategy performance analysis

Trading strategy performance analysisTechnical Analysis versus Statistical Modeling

There are many ways you can think about finding patterns. Some people like to do this visually. However, this generally doesn't lead to good codeable algorithms. Perhaps the industry standard for some time has been technical analysis . People do use this successfully. Very loosely speaking, technical analysis is a system for looking at price history plots (charts) and using them to decide when to enter and exit trades. While this is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, and many people do this successfully, I avoid this approach because I have a strong preference (because of my background) for statistical modeling. I use a mixture of regression and time series analysis, along with a few of my own custom tools, to analyze prices and develop strategies. Interestingly, the results are not always different. There are many cases where the signals generated by regression models are approximately aligned with signals that could be obtained using methods from technical analysis.

The key difference between the two approaches is the following. While technical analysis looks for patterns that will tell you if the price is about to go up or down, statistical models make statements about the probability distributions of price movements. In other words, technical analysis tells you when to go long or short, but it doesnt make any statement beyond that. Statistical modeling has at least two advantages:

it provides tools for evaluating model goodness-of-fit, i. e. assessing how appropriate a certain description of price data may be, and

it generates probabilistic statements about the future, which can be balanced against transaction costs to decide how to enter/exit positions.

Statistical modeling also has a disadvantage that is worth noting. That is,

statistical model-fitting algorithms are typically limited to simple linear Gaussian models.

There are many nonlinearities apparent in markets. I wont explain the ones I use (trade secrets). But to summarize, technical analysis indirectly provides ways of using important nonlinearities, while the common statistical models are not well-suited to capture these nonlinearities.

Ideally, one would aim for the best of both worlds - that is to have good nonlinear statistical models that capture some of the things that technical analysis makes use of.

On a side note, the lack of probabilistic content in technical analysis is recognized. The book Evidence-Based Technical Analysis: Applying the Scientific Method and Statistical Inference to Trading Signals. by David Aronson, appears to be a nice effort to address this problem.

Larry Connors has co-authored two of the best selling trading books of the decade: "Investment Secrets of a Hedge Fund Manager" (with Blake Hayward) which brought traders strategies that are now in the mainstream of Wall Street thinking and "Street Smarts" (with Linda Raschke), a must-read treatise that revealed the in-depth secrets of two well-known, successful traders.

"Connors on Advanced Trading Strategies" is Larry's latest and most valuable contribution to the trading community.

Here's what one of his readers writes:

"Thanks to Larry Connors, "I am now a General Partner for an Investment Advisory firm.

"Things look good for the future!"

(Greg Che, Cambridge, MA)

If you trade Futures, Stocks or Options, you can now have in your hands 258 pages of the very best material Larry Connors has ever researched, tested and revealed.

In its 258 pages and 31 chapters you will learn some of the most explosive short-term market strategies ever made available to traders.

Among the 30-plus strategies revealed in the manual are:

THE 15-MINUTE ADX BREAKOUT METHOD (Chapter 20) Especially for day-traders. This dynamic method teaches you how to specifically identify and trade the most explosive futures and stocks every day. This strategy alone is worth the price of the book. It specifically shows how to choose to enter the same market day after day. By identifying an over-all trend and then waiting for a market to "speak to you" just after the opening, you can take positions where before you might have hesitated or even refrained from entering. This is a day trader's dream. imagine buying low soon after the opening and selling higher late in the session. Day after day - in the same market.

OPTIONS (Section 6) Four chapters and numerous in-depth strategies for trading options. You will learn the strategies used by the Market Makers and a small handful of professionals to consistently capture options gains. Trading volatility with options Trading options with the Connors Vix Reversal Options on stock splits Exploiting overpriced stock sector options

CRASH BURN AND PROFIT (Chapter 11) Huge short-side profits occur when stocks implode. By following the simple rules of this setup you could have shorted Diana Corp at 67 3/8 - a few months later it had collapsed to 1 1/2. This, from one of the most straight-forward entry techniques you'll ever see.

The CONNORS "VIX REVERSALS" 1, 2 and 3: (Chapter 2) You will learn how the CBOE Volatility Index pinpoints short-term highs and lows in the S&P's and in the broad market. The average profit per trade is among the highest Larry has ever released in three of the most powerful strategies ever revealed.

ADVANCED VOLATILITY STRATEGIES (Section 2) Numerous never-before-revealed strategies and concepts using volatility measures to identify markets immediately before they explode.

TWO-FOR-ONE MONEY MANAGEMENT (Chapter 28) Specific money management methodology to use which helps maximize profits while keeping your risks to a minimum. It is an exit strategy which allows you to participate in potentially large moves with reduced exposure. You will find you have more confidence in taking trades as it allows you to enter into potentially explosive setups while reducing the risk inherent in these setups. This strategy helps offset your concerns about allowing profits to run.

MODIFYING TRADE SIZE AND STOP PLACEMENT Based on Volatility Measurement (Chapter 5) One of the most successful Commodity Trading Advisors in the world "blew up" his company because he ignored this one rule. His story is used as a lesson to point out the dangers of not paying attention to a market's changing volatility. You will know how to exploit market volatility when it explodes.
