Creating amanufacturing plan for new product

Creating amanufacturing plan for new productCreating a Manufacturing Plan for New Product

What this is

Process and checklists for creating a Manufacturing Plan for a new product at appropriate points in the new product development timeline. Includes checklist for the earliest draft as well as the final plan.

Why it's useful

Manufacturing planning gives the Operations or Manufacturing organization an early view into what will be required — people, capital, facilities, etc. — to begin and ramp up manufacturing of a new product. Some planning must be done early enough to allow for aspects such as lead times on new equipment required and development time for new testing approaches. As the Operations personnel think through later manufacturing work for this product, they will also come up with questions and inputs for the development team that can be critical to the product's manufacturability. Outputs of manufacturing planning may also have a significant impact on budget and resource requirements.

How to use it

Use the outline to develop a manufacturing plan.

Create the first draft of the plan during the development phase, once enough functional specifications have been written on the product for Operations to develop an initial strategy for manufacturing the product.

Bring questions that arise from drafting the plan to team meetings and pertinent design reviews.

Update the plan after the alpha build of equipment occurs and prior to the beta build. Beta build is typically when higher quantity of prototype product must be created to be used in beta tests at customers, and Operations is moving toward a more normal build cycle. The Manufacturing Plan should have all contents in place in at least draft form in time for planning for the beta build.

A final update to the plan may occur before the pilot build -- the first build that is mandated to use the final designed production processes, equipment, etc. Pilot build is intended to test out the manufacturing process, use of standard equipment, etc.

Modern manufacturing faces challenges resulting from:

Widespread globalization of operations and supply chains

The persistent need to bring new concepts to market at an ever faster pace

Increasing customer expectations for superior quality

Pressure to deliver products in the most cost effective manner possible.

Exponent engineers and scientists can help a manufacturing organization identify proactive actions to overcome these demands and can apply rigorous scientific methods to solve stubborn problems.

We provide the following capabilities to assist clients with the challenges they may face:

Continuing effective manufacturing operations rely on a deep understanding of processes and products that is translated into long-term solutions—not just short-term fixes. Exponent specialists use data-driven approaches based on sound scientific principles. We do not promote pre-packaged tools or try to force-fit all manufacturing problems into a single solution methodology. Tools, techniques, and isolated improvement events may drive down cost in the short term but are not likely to have lasting impact unless applied as part of an overall approach to improve processes and reduce systemic risk.

Where smy1099

Where smy1099Many will receive them later this year

Posted January 22, 2009

Weekends, holiday, and a change in the law.

For as long as most of us can remember, the deadline for financial firms to mail Form 1099 to their customers has been January 31. This year you may be receiving these forms more than two weeks later than you normally expect to see them appear in your mailbox.

A change in the law

The biggest reason is a change in the law. Congress decided to allow brokers and other firms that send Form 1099-B (such as mutual fund companies) until February 15 to mail this form. The change comes as part of a law that requires brokers to begin reporting basis, along with sales proceeds, on this form used to report sales of stock or mutual fund shares. The change relating to basis reporting won't take effect until later, so you won't see that information on Forms 1099-B for the 2008 tax year. The new mailing deadline took effect right away, though, so the this change applies for the current tax season.

What's affected

Strictly speaking, the change affects only Form 1099-B. The date by which your employer has to send Form W-2 is still January 31. Ditto items like Form 1099-INT and Form 1099-DIV.

However, just about all financial firms that send out Form 1099-B provide a combined report that includes information that would otherwise appear on Forms 1099-INT and 1099-DIV. The IRS has told these firms (PDF) they can use the later deadline for the combined report. What's more, they're allowed to do that even if you didn't have any sales this year, so the only information on your report is interest and dividends, which are otherwise subject to the earlier deadline.

Calendar effect

Then there's the calendar effect. Generally speaking, when a tax filing date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. This year, January 31 falls on a Saturday, so that means anything normally due to be mailed by that date doesn't have to be mailed until February 2.

What's more, February 15 falls on a Sunday, and February 16 is Presidents' Day. That means Forms 1099-B, and combined reports from companies that issue these forms, don't have to be mailed until February 17.

How long you wait after that is between you and the Post Office. The upshot is that you may be well into the third week of February before you see forms that normally arrive early in the first week.

Possible benefit

Although the focus of this change is Form 1099-B, it may produce a benefit in the form of fewer corrections to Form 1099-DIV. Investors have been plagued with those corrections ever since a change in the law to provide different tax treatment to different categories of dividends. Most firms required to send Form 1099-DIV report that information in a combined form with information that goes on Form 1099-B, and that means they'll have more time to assemble accurate information before sending the forms to their customers.

Training the manufacturing workforce don-t go it aloneTraining the Manufacturing Workforce: Don39;t Go It Alone

Darlene Millers long search is over, for now. About a month ago, her company, Permac Industries, hired an off-shift programmer for its Swiss-style CNC machinery, the culmination of a recruiting effort that surpassed two years.

Finding skilled and trained workers is almost impossible, says Miller, president and CEO of the Burnsville, Minn. custom manufacturer of precision parts. I used employment agencies. Our people used Craigslist, the workforce centers, state boards, college boards, technical schools, every concept you can think of, and still [we] could not find that trained person, she says.

Toyotas Dennis Dio Parker shares similar concerns. Parker, who is assistant manager, North American Production Support Center, at Toyota Motor Engineering Manufacturing North America, points out that a significant number of retirements are looming among workers at Toyotas Georgetown, Ky. plant, which at 26 years is the automakers oldest U. S. facility. Its workforce includes about 600 skilled maintenance-technician positions.

GERMANY - The German e-commerce and mail order business is going from strength to strength, the National Distance Selling Association reported on Monday in its 2011 turnover survey. Online sales were particularly strong.

In 2011, Germans spent more money than ever before on goods ordered on the Internet, a survey by the National E-Commerce and Distance Selling Association (BVH) showed on Monday.

Online trading amounted to 21.7 billion euros ($29.1 billion), an 18.5-percent increase year-on-year. This means that the 20-billion-euro mark was breached for the first time ever last year.

Germany's e-commerce and mail-order industry generated combined revenues of 34 billion euros in 2011 - 12.2 percent more than in the previous year. Distance selling accounted for 8.2 percent of overall trading activities in the country. Clothing and fashion items made up the bulk of the business.

BVH CEO Christoph Wenk-Fischer told reporters in Hamburg he'd not expected such a sales surge amid the eurozone debt crisis.

Growth prospects

The BVH said they expected e-commerce and mail-order sales to rise even further in 2012, with turnover reaching.

US consumer sentiment disappointed and fell to 80 points. It was expected to tick up from 85.1 to 85.6 points in August 2013. These levels were last seen in the summer of 2007. We might see an upwards revision, but this usually doesnt have the same effect of the initial publication.

The dollar was somewhat weaker before the publication, with EUR/USD trading above 1.3350 and USD/JPY at 97.30. The initial reaction is mixed. The real action might come with a delay, as weve seen beforehand.

Inflation expectations have remained unchanged at 3.1%. Other sub-components dropped.

According to Forex Live. there are big option expiries coming now.

Update: EUR/USD is weakening after the release, and it is off the highs.

Earlier, housing starts and building permits came out within expectations. After currencies hesitated and remained in the tight range, the dollar extended its weakness. Markets made a dollar meltdown yesterday.

Its important to note that liquidity is low in the long summer days. As traders are heading for the weekend, we could see some last minute scrambling and even wild action.

Manufacturing Process Efficiency Improvement Prepared for. Bob Millings CEO Prepared by. Maria Walters Vice President We hired Industry Consultants Inc. group of efficiency consultants who have two experts in paper manufacturing processes on their staff to assist in improving our manufacturing process. Based on observations and analysis of our manufacturing process Industry Consultants Inc. recommended that we purchase the Efficient Cardboard Manufacturing ECM software program and that we computerize job scheduling and operation of the cutter. Summary Methodology Conclusion Industry Consultants Inc. made the following observations about our manufacturing process at Lakota Cardboard.

On September and Sept two industrial engineers—Lynda Burqhart and Patrick Littlehorse—who specialize in paper product manufacturing walked around the manufacturing floor with stop watches and video cameras and studied our process. These are their observations. • The most time consuming part of the process is changing the paper rolls on the corrugator. Situation. Three rolls of kraft paper must be loaded onto the corrugators at the beginning of each job and sometimes new rolls must be loaded when one runs out. At the end of job usually one or more of the paper rolls must be switched out for different weight of paper. For each loading process forklift operator must drive to the storage area retrieve the correct roll of paper transport it back to the corrugators and load it. This process typically takes to minutes. For each swap process the paper roll must be removed from the corrugator transported back to the storage area and then new roll must be selected transported and loaded. swap process typically takes to minutes. Because of the extreme weight and size of the paper rolls transporting and loading or removing the paper rolls is dangerous and time consuming job; for safety reasons almost all other work must stop in the area while paper is transported loaded or unloaded. Significance. Because swapping paper rolls happens multiple times during manufacturing shift the process of moving the paper rolls causes lot of down time among the workers on the manufacturing floor. Remarks Recommendations. Using the new ECM software program specifications for all jobs should be entered into the computer as they are received. The ECM program will then batch all jobs that use the same rolls of paper together. This will save significant time and money as fewer paper roll swaps will be needed.

• Significant amounts of cardboard are wasted in the cutting process. Situation. When box blanks are cut at the cutter excess cardboard that does not fit the job pattern is discarded. Significance. Lakota Cardboard is paying for paper and glue and time to create that cardboard; simply throwing it out increases our recycle fees and wastes money and resources. Remarks Recommendations. The ECM program can batch together jobs that use the same cardboard specifications and create an efficient cutting pattern that will meet the needs of multiple jobs. Using the ECM software should result in less waste of cardboard at the cutting stage. Lakota Cardboard currently uses the following procedure in typical shift at the cardboard manufacturing plant. Each job work order repeats this process. 1. The shift manager schedules jobs ranking them according to project deadline or size with those jobs that need to be completed first or those that are larger being processed first. 2. Appropriate rolls of kraft paper for the job are moved via forklift from storage and loaded onto the corrugator. 3. The corrugator is set to the fluting specified in the order and the corrugated medium is steamed crimped and glued to the liner papers. 4. The finished cardboard moves down the conveyor belt to the cutting machine.

5. The cutting machine is manually set for the job and box blanks are cut. 6. The finished box blanks move to the flexo machine area. 7. The box blanks are printed waxed if required and glued. 8. Finished boxes are stacked and moved to the banding machine. Installing and utilizing the ECM software will cause some consternation among our employees and the process of transitioning to its use must be carefully managed so as not to disrupt our daily operations. Install ECM software accessories and workstations at shift manager's desks corrugator and cutter. The actual installation of hardware and software and necessary interfaces with our existing machines can happen over the course of weekend and should not disrupt work. Train office personnel shift managers corrugator operators and cutter operators in use of the ECM software. Many of the Lakota Cardboard employees are computer phobic and will need to be taught how to use the computer interface and ECM software. We recommend several training sessions using computers only before the workstations are installed. Develop sorting process between the cutting area and flexo areas.

and so on.
