Don't commit.

Don't buy systems.

Just learn to trade.

The only way trading can become a stable income is if you have the ability to adapt, and you can't do that if you just use someones elses system or signals. When you understand the graph enough to make your own decisions, you'll do well, feel confident and understand what tradings all about.

If you take someone elses work, when it stops working, they understand it, change it and make it work - You're stuck with a wasted product, a lack of cash and no improvement to your trading and a waste of time. After a while you'll realise that you should have just traded properly from the start and not looked for a bunch of short-cuts like indicators.

Sure indicators can work, but they are just a representation of price, i could look at a chart and tell you what the MACD looks like, understand? Instead of letting indicators tell you its a retracement or overbought, see it in the charts formations, movement, ranges etc. When you get good at trading you realise that every indiciator you ever investigated when you started in actual fact was just showing you what the price was showing you.

Good luck sir, don't spend money on systems, read forums, be patient with your learning don't give up, read 'Come into my trading room' by Alexander Elder (this will teach you so much) read Forex Trading: Online Currency Trading in the Foreign Exchange Market. watch the charts, choose how you want to trade, do it, feel good, breakeven, gain experience, make money.

Thats the process. It may take 4 months, but you're learning how to catch the fish, not being given the fish because your hungry and then wondering how your going to get the next.

How to backtest forex

How to backtest forexHow to backtest forex?

How to backtest forex?

I want to backtest a strategy in Forex, but am not quite sure about how to go about it. There are a number of ways that spring to mind.

1. Export data to Excel and analyse it by means of self written functions ( could be difficult to construct the correct functions, and may well be reinventing the wheel)

2. Get some charts for the last 3 months or so and visually mark exits and entries, and take a note of profit/loss in Excel or

3. use some form of Platform Strategy tester such as the one in MT4 (which I guess means you need to be able to code your strategy into an expert, and understand how to write in MQL).

Before I go down any of these routes, has anyone any pointers/experiences that I should bear in mind? or any preferences as to which route to take? and how far back would provide a representative sample? Are there any handy references anywhere that explain in simple language how to write in the MT4 language?

5steps to thinking outside of the box

5steps to thinking outside of the boxA few years back our litigation team was faced with a seemingly insurmountable task: how to defend our clients trademark rights against a Fortune 500 company with a massive litigation budget. They had the facts on their side. Moreover, they had money. Worst of all, they had a gaggle of lawyers that just made the case down right unpleasant. In spite of this, as luck would have it, they were missing one very crucial thing that they had never learned in law school. Something big firm life had failed to teach them. Quite simply, they were limited in their thinking to that which was rather than that which could be.

Looking beyond conventional defense methods, we deconstructed every element of the case until we discovered a plan to turn the tables. In trademark law priority of use is everything. Whoever is the first to use a specific trademark typically wins an infringement case, especially where the trademarks as well as the goods and services of the parties involved are very similar if not identical. At any rate, the other side had priority of use. The trademarks were very similar. The services were almost identical. We might as well just throw in the towel, right? Wrong!

In thinking beyond the realm of traditional defenses, we wondered what if we could find someone else who had priority of use associated with their own trademark that preceded that of the opposing party? What if we could find this mythical entity and purchase their rights to their trademark, thus acquiring their earlier priority rights as compared to those of our opponent? Could it work?

Well, not only could it, it did. After a brief search we found a small company in a Midwestern state that miraculously had been using the same trademark as our opponent for more than 50 years. They were considering closing their business already when we arrived and bought them out for a fraction of what it would have cost to defend the case in court. After acquiring their trademark rights including the priority of use date prior to that of our opponents first use date, that gaggle of lawyers quickly moved from shooting at fish in a barrel to being the fish in the barrel. The case settled within days.

How did we do it? How can you? Sometimes when you are losing in a game you have to stop playing by the rules, switch it up, and change the game itself.

People often speak about thinking outside the box, but how do you really do it? What does it mean to be limited to inside the box as opposed to being outside? The key is to define the box in any given situation and then to seek alternative, often unconventional solutions that would be considered beyond the norm.

When you are faced with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, train yourself to not merely focus on the specific issue at hand but also think more expansively about all of the reasons and the paths that led to the issue. Consider every possibility and hypothetical alteration of that reality along the path, never being dismissive of anything. When you do this, alternative solutions will often materialize giving you options you did not see when narrowly focusing on a specific issue.

Here are a few tips that we have learned along the way that have aided us in getting outside the box:

1. Identify the issue.

2. Determine whether a regular or typical solution to the problem exists.

3. If one does, youre done. If no, map out everything that went into creating the issue. In this aspect, be expansive. Include everything possible.

4. Once you start mapping out the issue more completely, start looking for ways to address the situation in one of the more outlying areas that was not considered previously.

5. Never dismiss a possible solution on the basis, “It simply cannot be done.” Consider everything. Go through every possibility until you know for a fact it can or cannot be done.

This is exactly the way we won the case referenced above. If we thought inside the box our thinking would have been:

1. Can we defend on the grounds the trademarks are not similar? No.

2. Can we defend on the grounds the trademarks are used on different goods and/or services? No.

3. Do we have priority of use? No.

In thinking outside the box we began looking at how did the opponent acquire their trademark rights they are now asserting against us? Could we acquire trademark rights that are superior to theirs? We could if there was another company out there using the same trademark as our opponent before they did that would be willing to sell it to our client for a reasonable price. Well, lets see if we can find one. And we did.

Teach yourself to look at problems more expansively. Never be dismissive of a potential solution before you have thoroughly thought it through. Think outside the proverbial box.

5m TF Price Action Strategy

Update June 2015: Hi folks, this strategy is still getting the odd comment and viewing, glad to see it's still of value to you! I'm still actively trading with (most) of the principles below. I only take 3-4 trades per week, and use the higher timeframes (daily chart) to establish my overall trading bias/direction. Also in lieu of the 5m timeframe opening range, I use the Asian range from 0 GMT to 5 GMT as a high and low to either take reversal entries from the extremities or as breakout pullbacks.

Cheers good luck, JN.

Welcome to my thread on my 5 minute timeframe price action strategy. This is a discretionary strategy that trades with the trend on a 5 minute timeframe. This strategy has evolved from Price Action techniques I’ve learnt via Lance Beggs at yourtradingcoach PeteFader’s MadScalper strategy here on babypips.

This strategy trades with the trend on a 5m TF, taking pullbacks that utilise the 14ema and volume. While also being aware of Support Resistance, Stopping Volume, upcoming news announcements session opens.

I currently day-trade this strategy full-time at the Asian Open for a few hours, then the Frankfurt Open for a few hours. I focus on trading AUDUSD, USDJPY and EURUSD. I liken trading to a mix between fishing and playing poker, I’ll use these analogies throughout as they work quite well.

I'll discuss each component of the strategy, and then post trades each day showing it all working together. Things will be easier to understand if you read through the basics so we're all speaking the same language.

The first six posts in this thread are prerequisite, as there are a few price action basics to introduce. There are also links around the web that reinforce the concepts. Like all forums on babypips, please feel free to participate but try avoid any question that you could google for yourself.

I’ve bookmarked the next few posts, and I’ll fill them up over this week to include:

Trend Definition, Trend Simplification,

previous day’s high and low, opening range, support resistance, 100 levels,

stop loss levels, position sizing, trade management,

VSA, stopping volume, confirming trend volume, no supply / no demand,

brokers, demo accounts practice, chart setup, trade execution, orders, pairs, references indicators*,

*This strategy doesn’t use any indicators in the traditional sense (no RSI’s, MACD’s etc.) but does use indicators to mark session opens, daily high lows, and a couple of moving averages to summarise the trend.

Once the forum gets rolling please post any trades that use the strategy and ask any questions. If there's any queries about MQL4 coding, detailed trading questions or requests for any of my custom indis or templates; I'd request a donation to onegirl . While this isn't soliciting or advertising, it shows a commitment from your end. For me, a big part of trading is paying it forward.

I don't necessarily agree with people selling their trading services, that'd be like a fisherman making you pay him in fish to teach you how to fish.

Cheers look forward to you reading along joining in,

P. S. So we're all talking about the same charts, I've put together this basic template with indis, you'll need to add a 14ema and MT4's volume indicator.

I'd encourage everyone to post charts ask questions etc. Please (feel free to) use the template provided above so we're all looking at the same chart, try to zoom in mark your entries exits with MT4's arrow symbol.

Balanced scorecard training

Balanced scorecard trainingBalanced Scorecard Training

Balanced Scorecard Training with a difference: Customised to your needs, you develop your balanced scorecard components, as the course develops.

It really made me think hard about what we believe about how performance should be managed: how that affects what we do, how we manage our people and what effects that gets. Inez Bailey, Chief Executive, National Adult Literacy Agency

If you are looking to simply develop and implement measures you have come to the wrong place. We help organisations use the Strategic Balanced Scorecard Approach: an approach that helps them design, communicate and execute their strategy, whilst tackling the wider issues of the discipline and the culture that creates performance. (Measures, targets and basic scorecards play a part: but only a small part).

We help organisations influence behaviours and deliver strategy, in a way that suits their culture and todays environment. We help organisations understand and use Fourth Generation Balanced Scorecard thinking and techniques.

Not only has the Balanced Scorecard approach evolved, but different approaches to the Balanced scorecard suit different circumstances and have different effects. Also, a different emphasis within the approach helps to solves different strategy, performance and cultural problems. So, our training is not mere theory, nor superficial techniques.

We teach you to fish (and more). Our training is based on over 15 years Strategic Balanced Scorecard experience, in over 50 implementations, having worked for the originators and written a book on the subject. It is practical training in the underlying thinking so you can apply that thinking, appropriately, to your organisations market, circumstances, business and performance management challenges. In other words, we teach you how to design and use the fishing rods that you need to catch your sort of fish, in your fishing waters.

We have standard courses (see below) which we customise to each clients particular needs, industry and culture. We have well proven material, but we discuss your organisations needs in detail beforehand, so we present and facilitate in the way that will most benefit your team and your circumstances.

Some Testimonials from our training courses workshops

Thank you. That balanced scorecard training was simply the best days training I have had for a long while. MI Manager, Department of Work Pensions

We made real progress with the strategy, balanced scorecard, and the team, in only two days. Lindsay Stratton, Managing Director, Unite Modular Solutions

You held the audiences attention and gave them just what they wanted. That was excellent, thanks. Todd S Johnson, Bettermanagement

It is a simple, effective and easy to understand system, to manage your performance. Ben Ticehurst, Assistant Chief Executive, Peterborough City Council

The real benefit was thinking deeper about the problem and why we failed in the past. Mats Knuttson, HSSE Director, Addax Petroleum

You presented with so much energy and enthusiasm, I thought you were going to knock the flip chart over! Rich Ryder, Quality Improvement Manager, HRMC

Endorsements for our approach from David Norton

Our Balanced Scorecard training is based upon, fifteen years experience, combined with our book, Strategy Mapping for Learning Organizations by our Chief Executive, Phil Jones. In the foreword to that book, David Norton (co-author of The Balanced Scorecard) wrote: This book is a drivers manual for anyone who is implementing a Balanced Scorecard performance management system. [] it is required reading.

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”…

// Learn How to Day Trade and Learn How to Swing Trading

As Day Traders and Swing Traders our mission is simple. We are looking for stocks that we expect will move in a predictable direction. We want to take a position with a predefined stop level and profit target. Sounds easy right? In a lot of ways it is. But there are literally thousands of different strategies for trading the market. Every trader has a unique approach to trading. Our goal is to teach you our strategies. I have developed a series of profitable trading strategies for beginners. Our Trading Courses focus on the most fundamental aspects of a successful trade.

// Chart Patterns

After you understand risk management and proper stock selection, we teach you how to find stock patterns on charts. These patterns are how we base our risk and reward. We look for chart patterns that have well defined areas of support and resistance. We will use previous support levels as our stop price, or our risk, and we look at previous resistance areas as our initial profit target, or our reward. If the profit vs loss ratio is 2:1 we will take the trade. I teach both day trading strategies and swing trading strategies. For day trading we focus primarily on 5min charts while swing traders focus more on daily charts. The patterns in general are the same. I teach traders how to find patterns in real-time including Bull Flags, Bear Flags, Flat Tops, Flat Bottoms, and Rubber Band Reversal Setups.

// Trading Strategies

Learning risk management, proper stock selection, and chart patterns is important, but those alone don’t create a trading strategy. A trading strategy requires details on the time of day you take these trades, what type of stocks you like to trade, what percentage to success you expect. All our students are required to papertrade and prove to me that they can trade on a percentage of success that is high enough to justify real trading. If you can’t make money in a demo account, you have no business trading a real account. We have saved students hundreds of thousands of dollars by encouraging paper trading while they are learning. The market will be here for a long time to come. The important thing for you right now is to build up the skills to trade the market successfully. You will learn that once you possess the skills to consistently make $20.00/day all it takes to make $200 is larger share size. Then all it takes to make $2000 is again, larger share size. The hardest part is being consistently green just $20/day. So that is our initial target for all of our students. Profitable trading 4/5 days per week for at least 3 months.
