Support and resistance how to trade with support and resistance

Support and resistance how to trade with support and resistanceSupport and Resistance. How to Trade with Support and Resistance

Support and Resistance is a powerful pillar to trading and most strategies have some type of support/resistance (S/R) analysis built into them. Support and Resistance provides the trader many clues about the market and how to trade with it. This is the first part in a multi-part series on support and resistance. Today, we are going to look at what Support and Resistance is and what its benefits are to traders.

Support and Resistance is one of the most widely followed technical analysis techniques in the financial markets. It is a simple method to analyze a chart quickly to determine 3 points of interest to a trader:

Which direction to trade the market Timing an entry in the market Establishing points to exit the market at either a profit of loss

If a trader can answer the 3 items above, then they essentially have a trading idea. Identifying levels of Support and Resistance on a chart can answer those questions for the trader.

What is Support and Resistance?

(Created using FXCMs Marketscope 2.0 charts)

As you can see on the chart above, Support is a price level below which a currency pair has difficulty going and Resistance is a price level above which a pair has difficulty going. Think of the area between support and resistance as being a room. Support is the floor and resistance is the ceiling. The pair will move between those two levels until a “breakout” occurs in one direction or the other.

In theory, support is the price level at which demand (buying power) is strong enough to prevent the price from declining further. The rationale is that, as the price gets closer and closer to support, and becomes cheaper in the process, buyers see a better deal, and are more likely to buy. Sellers become less likely to sell, since they are getting a worse deal. In that scenario, demand (buyers) will overcome supply (sellers) and that will prohibit price from falling below support.

As one might suspect, support does not always hold. When price breaks below support, that behavior indicates that the sellers have won out over the buyers. This breach of support indicates that now the trading mindset is more inclined to sell than buy. After a support level is broken, a trader can expect another level of support to be established at the next point where buyers have established themselves.

Resistance, on the other hand, is the price level at which supply (selling power) is strong enough to prevent the price from rising further. The rationale behind this is that as the price gets closer and closer to resistance, and becomes more expensive in the process, sellers are more likely to sell and buyers become less likely to buy. In that scenario, supply (sellers) will overcome demand (buyers) and that will prohibit price from going above resistance.

Like support, resistance does not always hold and a break above resistance demonstrates that the bulls (buyers) have won out over the bears (sellers). Since resistance has been broken, buyers now have an increased willingness to buy at even higher prices since price has continued to move up, and doesnt look likely to come back down. Once the former resistance level is broken, a new level of resistance will be formed at a level where sellers have taken a stand.

As a general rule, the longer the time frame of the chart, the stronger the established support and resistance levels will be. In other words, support and resistance levels reflected on a Daily chart will be stronger than those appearing on a 1-hour chart, for example.

With this basic introduction, its probably pretty easy to see how beneficial an understanding of support and resistance can be in your trading. Traders who accurately recognize strong support and resistance levels often do much better at locating trading opportunities and often have more confidence in how to manage their trades (where to place their stop loss and take profit levels).

A: Used car buyers often take comfort knowing they're buying from the original owner. And sometimes house buyers like to know that the selling family has lived there awhile.

When it comes to cars or houses, constantly flipping might indicate there's something wrong. There's a reason why the property is being dumped. And buyers don't want to buy another person's problems.

COLUMN: What stock can I buy to make me $50,000 richer?

COLUMN: Don't let buyer's remorse derail your investment strategy

But stocks are much different. Just because a stock is bought and sold frequently, and has high trading volume, doesn't tell you much about the quality of the investment.

There are many factors that determine how frequently a stock trades. Stocks with lower per-share prices, for instance, tend to have higher trading volumes simply because the same dollar investment translates into more shares. And just because a stock has a higher per-share dollar price doesn't mean it's a better investment than a stock with a lower per-share price. Similarly, large companies with many shares outstanding tend to have high trading volume.

Trading volume can also spike around the release of news, as investors scramble to buy and sell as they digest the new information. And other stocks tend to have high trading volumes because they're in the news or of special interest to investors.

Don't confuse trading volume with long-term intentions by investors either. A bulk of the market's trading volume is simply buying and selling done by computers programmed to fire off trades. These computer programs don't even know what the companies do, nor do they care. They're just trading in nanoseconds trying to make a quick buck on short-term moves.

Some investors combine trading volume with price moves to glean insights. For instance, some investors might look at a big price move, either higher or lower, as more meaningful if it comes on big volume. Conversely, some investors would distrust a big move higher, and think it's a fake rally, if it is done on low volume.

Heavy stock trading can present some benefits to investors. For instance, the more buying and selling in a stock, the closer the bid and ask price of a stock gets. That's a technical way of saying that when investors buy or sell a heavily traded stock, they tend to get a more fair price. It's just as when you sell an item on eBay. If many people are bidding on the product, as a seller, you're more likely to get a price that's closer to what the object is actually worth than if only one person is bidding.

But overall, the fact some stocks are more heavily traded than others doesn't tell you much about the future prospects of a stock, but is a key aspect of short-term trading.

Level ii and day trading

Level ii and day tradingLevel II and Day Trading

Let's focus on the Nasdaq for the purposes of this page. Level II is a day trading system which provides a list of all buyers and sellers for each stock being day traded on the Nasdaq exchange. Bids (i. e. requests from buyers to purchase quantities of stocks) are arranged in price order (from the highest bid to the lowest bid) and Asks (sellers - the opposit of buyers) are arranged from the lowest to highest price.

NASDAQ Level II allows a day trader to guage the depth of the market - how much liquidity there is, where the likely thin spots are and so on. It can therefore help in deciding whether to place a day trade or not. If you wish to use a level II system with any degree of success, a day trading player must discover the importance of each market participant and market maker he can see on the screen. This takes time and effort - other players have worked hard for this day trading secret information and are unlikely to share it with you for free.

A direct access day trading system that utilises NASDAQ Level II makes day trading rather more likely to succeed, as it will 'level the field', i. e. it is almost the last piece of information that can be legally obtained (being able to see the market maker's book would be the last piece of info!). Some trading accounts provide this info free - for example at time of writing Ameritrade supply a java-based Level II viewer for th eIsland network.

6e trap trading example

6e trap trading example6E Trap Trading Example

This is an example of a 6E trade, using the methodology of Trap Trading. This trade is one of the most reliable: a double trap at the top.

Price made a strong move to the upside and big money started trapping buyers, before showing his hand and sending price down, running buyers stops.

After some minutes, trapped traders started bailing and I got out at the next key level for a quick win. I decided to make a video of this trade, to show how I spotted this trap and how following order flow and block trades insured this trade was going to be a winner. The video can be accessed at the course content members page.

Also, I explain in the video some ideas on how to trade Spot Forex using forex futures order flow traps.

Want to trade the iraqi dinar

Want to trade the iraqi dinarWant to Trade the Iraqi Dinar?

While the Iraqi Dinar has become a currency-du-jour of sorts, with many so-called experts claiming that it is a smart investment option for foreign exchange traders, the current underlying fundamentals of Iraq and the Middle East on the whole make it an unappealing trading opportunity for the time being and years to come.

Primarily, there is no market for the Iraqi Dinar (spot: USD IQD ) right now. Starting in 2004, following the US led invasion of Iraq, the Dinar has faced illiquid market conditions amid continued uncertainty of the political outlook of the country. Despite appreciating from 2004 to early 2009, since February 2009, the USDIQD has held steady near a de facto currency peg of 1 US Dollar = 1170.00 Iraqi Dinar. In January 2012, it weakened to 1165.00. The chart below says it all:

Despite these conditions, investors are still drawn to the prospect of a politically stable Iraq in the future, and, more likely, finding exposure to movements in oil good reasons to invest in a potential commodity. Currently, Iraqs oil reserves are the second largest in the world a scintillating prospect for investment should Iraq increase the number of barrels of oil it exports a day. However, given that there are few buyers and sellers of the Iraqi Dinar currently, those seeking to expose themselves to the prospect of appreciating oil prices should look elsewhere.

Over the past two years, four currency pairs have moved significantly with Crude Oil futures, making them an appealing trading opportunity for those looking for exposure to commodity strength. If investors are looking for said opportunities, they should look no further than going long AUDJPY. long AUDUSD, long CADJPY, or short USD CAD. Accordingly, trading these pairs as exposure to oil has resulted in greater yields than Crude Oil itself over the past two years.

As quantitative easing is expected to resume around the globe for the coming months, broad market sentiment is that commodities should resume their recent trend of appreciation. Now, with the USDCAD pair holding near its highest correlation to Crude Oil in the past decade. opportunity exists for traders to yield significant profits on any further Crude Oil appreciation in the coming months by going short USDCAD, or even long AUDJPY, long AUDUSD, or long CADJPY.
